The Geography |
As you drive any of the main routes north from Denpasar fertile palm-fringed rice fields gradually give way to tropical rain forest which in turn make way for mist-shrouded pine plantations. The air is fresher and the temperature cooler. In a short space of time you have entered an area of Bali unlike any other. |

As there are many attractions to enjoy at our destination, the morning travel is direct through the elevated landscape of the volcanic plains. Our first stop, and refreshment break, provides a spectacular view of Bali's agricultural diversity. The charming area of Bedugal and the town of Candikuning form the hub for fruit and vegetable produce and a visit to the local market is a must - particularly when mango, strawberries and mangosteen are in season. Some of the floral displays are stunning. We take the opportunity to explore the much-photographed Hindu lake temple (Pura Ulun Danu Bratan) and wander around the botanical gardens. Onward and upward we slowly drive along the rim of the three great volcanic lakes - Bratan, Buyan and Tamblingan, before stopping for lunch at the hillside village of Munduk. Noted for its aquaculture projects, it is also an area where coffee, cocoa and clove plantations abound. Our return journey takes us through the picturesque Pupuan district and the tropical rain forest around Sanda, before returning to the fertile uplands of Tabanan and the magnificent panorama of Bali’s rice terraces. |

Our morning begins with a short drive to the village of Singapadu, the site of Bali’s famous bird and reptile sanctuaries. We stop to admire over 250 bird species during our leisurely tree-level stroll and afterwards get acquainted with Indonesia’s famous Komodo dragon. A short drive north finds us in Ubud where we stop for refreshments and to admire the cultural diversity on display in the artist village. Climbing steadily into the lush mountain terrain to Tampaksiring, we stop to explore the most impressive ancient monument in Bali – Gunung Kawi. Consisting of ten rock-cut shrines set in 7m-high individual niches, these statues preside over the tranquillity of a steep river valley. After another 20 kilometres we arrive at Penelokan, a village situated on the edge of the twin-caldera volcano Batur. Our lunch break is spent taking in the breathtaking panorama of this 1717 metre high mountain and the ambiance of its peaceful lake. The return journey takes us through Bangli town where we visit the state temple (Pura Kehan). Situated on a beautifully terraced hillside, it purports to be a miniature version of the mother temple - Besakih. We now head directly to the coast and stop at Lebih beach, whose sand is predominately made of mica allowing the afternoon sun to sparkle from millions of crystal points. |
